BINDERAn adhesive, coagulate, reducer, or extender added to pigments
to maintain consistency, to promote adhesion, and to facilitate application.
BISECTTo divide into two equal parts.
BITThe smallest unit of electronic information a computer can handle.
BIT MAPAlso called PIXEL MAP. A matrix of dots or pixels.
BLACK ARTAlso called BASE ART. Art used in making process plates
for illustrations of two or more colors.
BLACK-AND-WHITE(1) Line art executed in a black-and-white medium
only; (2) Continuous-tone art executed in black, white, and intermediate
tones.
BLACK PATCHA black masking patch pasted into the exact size and
location on artwork where a photograph is to appear on the reproduction
copy.
BLEEDThe borders on the artwork and printing plate that extend beyond
the final trimmed edge of the sheet.
BLENDING Mixing or incorporating one color or tone with another.
BLOCKING INIndicating the broad outline of an object or shapes in a
picture using preliminary lines.
BLOCK OUTEliminating an unwanted section of a picture.
BLOWUPAn enlargement.
BLUEPRINT A direct, positive print made on chemically treated paper
from a translucent or transparent drawing.
BOARDAny heavy material used for mounting art or making displays.
