Pencils, ContinuedColor pencilsCarbon pencilsThe primary difference between color pencils and graphite pencils is howeasily color deceives when rendering tonal values. Color pencils handle thesame as graphite pencils and create the same range of effects. Relatively newto fine arts rendering, the degree of permanence of color pencils is notcertain. When creating illustrations in color, you have additional concernsabout color compatibility, adjacency, and tonal reproduction. Refer tochapter 2, “Color Theory.”Carbon pencil lead is made of synthetic materials. These leads producedense, dull, black lines that are not easily erased. They come in a variety ofdegrees of hardness. The softer leads are more versatile than the hard leadsbecause the softer leads deposit their pigment more easily. Hard leads have agreater amount of binder, are more brittle, and are less dense in deposit.1-24
