Pencils, ContinuedRegular officeThe regular office pencil sharpener sharpens the pencil lead to a conicalpencilpoint. It both shaves, away the wooden casing and shapes the lead core.sharpenerAlthough a conical point is excellent for drawing thin, precise lines, youmust maintain point consistency by sharpening often.Draftsman’spencilsharpenerUnlike the regular office sharpener, the draftsman’s sharpener does not shaveaway the wood case around the lead core. The draftsman’s sharpener shapesonly the lead. Expose the lead core approximately 3/8 inch by either cuttingaway the wood with a knife or releasing the lead from the mechanical pencilhandle. Insert the lead into the draftsman’s pencil sharpener and rotate thesharpener top. This contacts the pencil lead with a replaceable sandpapertube inside the sharpener and creates a conical point.Figure 1-6 shows a draftsman’s pencil sharpener.Figure 1-6.—The draftsman’s pencilsharpener.Continued on next page1-17
