Letter Compositions, ContinuedCenteringCentering letters, in both formal and informal page layouts, presents apleasing and easily understood hierarchy of information. Since the letters ofan alphabet vary in width, the location of the first and last letters of wordsyou want to center is difficult to project. There is more than one method forcentering letters on a page. One method of centering letters on a page is toletter a piece of scratch paper, fold the paper in half to find the centerline(CL), and transfer the letters to the original.Figure 5-41 illustrates how to find the center of a lettered piece of scratchpaper.Figure 5-41.—Folded scrappaper locates centerline.Another method of centering letters on a page involves counting the numberof characters on a line and dividing them in half. Punctuation, lower case“l,” and the letter “i,” in both upper and lower case, count only as ½ a letterbecause they take up less space.Figure 5-42 illustrates the counting method of centering words.Figure 5-42.—Counting characters to center words.Continued on next page5-40
