Letter Compositions, ContinuedLegibilityLegibility is a primary concern in the selection of letter style and the layoutof lettering on a page. Factors having the greatest bearing on legibility arethe style and size of the letter and the space between letters, words, and linesof lettering.STYLE: Open, clean-cut letters, simply designed, provide maximumlegibility. On projects that do not require specific letter styles, style selectionis left to the DM. When composing layouts with extensive amounts oflettering, limit the selection of letters to no more than three different styles toavoid a haphazard appearance or visual overload. Use different letter sizes tosubordinate some information to other information when you have a greatamount of lettering.Figure 5-36 shows how to subordinate letters of the same style to primarytext.Figure 5-36.—Subordinating secondary information to primary informationusing type size.Continued on next page5-35
